Backpacking Colombia
Colombia is my favourite country in South America, and in fact, my favourite country in the whole world (so far at least!). Despite the poor reputation that still clings to the country, Colombia was the most welcoming, colourful and beautiful country I have visited, and it blew any expectations I had right out of the water.
I spent a month backpacking around Colombia during my first trip to the continent, then returned a year later to go back to my favourite spots, and I would go back again tomorrow if there weren’t so many other places I want to visit for the first time.
Bogota is a centre for culture, with museums, busy markets and incredible street art, although some areas can still be dangerous. Medellin is no longer a city ruled by drug lords, and it has reborn into a thriving hub for growth, and a popular digital nomad hub.
Away from the cities, you can enjoy Caribbean beaches, discover a lost civilisation in the rain forest, hike among palm trees and sample freshly roasted coffee in the farm where it was grown. Take in a dip in natural jacuzzis in Guadalupe, get an adrenaline fix in San Gil, and explore the pretty towns where horses and motorbikes outnumber the cars.
I recommend you start with the Backpacking Colombia Guide below which covers all of the basics including entry requirements, safety in Colombia and a suggested Colombia itinerary. Then scroll down to read more about specific places to visit in Colombia.
