How Does Worldpackers Work?
On the Worldpackers website, you can browse all available volunteer placements by location or by a particular skill or type of work. It is free to look at the different volunteer opportunities, so can see what kind of placements are available on Worldpackers before you sign up.
If you would like to contact a host you will need to register as a verified member and pay the Worldpackers membership fee so they know that you are who you say you are. You can then send them a message to see if you can go and volunteer with them.
As well as having a well-designed website where you can search for placements, you can also use the Worldpackers app to search for and contact potential hosts.

One of the most popular options for work in exchange for accommodation is working in hostels. Depending on the host’s requirements you might expect to work for 5 or 6 days a week for around 5 hours a day, in exchange for a free bed in a hostel dorm and a free breakfast.
What is expected and what is offered by the host varies depending on each individual placement, so make sure you check the details carefully. While I was backpacking in Mexico I volunteered at several different hostels, each with slightly different requirements, but I had great fun at them all!

Worldpackers work hard to maintain a safe environment for volunteers and guests, and they have a dedicated page to safety on their website. All hosts go through a verification process, and all Worldpackers members are asked to write an honest review after they have completed an experience with a host.

Do you need a Visa for Worldpackers?
If you don’t need a visa to actually travel to the country where you want to do a work exchange, you shouldn’t need a work visa to do a work exchange, as really it is a cultural exchange and you won’t be doing paid for your work.
However, some countries do require a specific visa for volunteering, so check the host listing to see if they mention needing specific paperwork, and check iVisa to see if you do need a travel visa. Remember, it is your responsibility to make sure you have all of the required paperwork to travel.
