What is Worldpackers?
Worldpackers is a work exchange website which connects travellers with hosts around the world who are looking for volunteers to help them with their businesses and personal projects. In exchange for working a few hours a day, volunteers get free accommodation, and often get meals and other perks included as well.
In their own words, Worldpackers says they are:
a community based on collaboration and honest relationships that make travel more accessible to those seeking a profound cultural experience. Through an online platform, we connect travelers – looking to exchange their skills for accommodation – with incredible hosts from all around the world.
Worldpackers was launched in Brazil in 2013, and although it is a relatively young organisation they are expanding rapidly, with a growing community of over 1 million travellers and hosts in 170 countries.
How Does Worldpackers Work?
On the Worldpackers website, you can browse all available volunteer placement by location or by a particular skill or type of work. If you would like to contact a host you will need to register as a verified member so they know that you are who you say you are. You can then send them a message to see if you can go and volunteer with them.
As well as having a well-designed website where you can search for placements, you can also use the Worldpackers app to search for and contact potential hosts.
Check out this video for a one-minute explanation of how Worldpackers works:
How Much Does Worldpackers Cost?
Worldpackers is free for hosts who want to advertise their work exchange. For potential volunteers looking for a work exchange placement, you can browse the Worldpackers website to find potential hosts for free, however, in order to contact the hosts you need to become a verified member. Without the Worldpackers discount code, a year’s verified membership for one person costs $49 – which is reduced to $29 with the $20 promo code.
If you are travelling with a friend or partner, you can sign up together for a joint membership for just $59 for the year ($39 with the promo code), and with that, you can apply for work exchange placements together.
Work exchanges are a great way to save money while you are travelling long term, so if you are not paying for accommodation this initial investment will easily pay for itself after one or two work exchanges in the year, so it is definitely worth it!

As a verified member of Worldpackers, you also get assistance and support from Worldpackers staff throughout your trip and are eligible to receive Worldpackers insurance in case of an emergency or if the host doesn’t abide by what you had agreed for your placement.
Another great thing about signing up for Worldpackers is that you become part of their Worldpackers community, joining a million other travellers who all love to explore the world just like you do! As well as lots of articles with tips about travelling, volunteering and finding the perfect work exchange for you, as a verified member you also have access to the Worldpackers Academy which has exclusive presentations and talks from experienced Worldpackers to help you learn as you travel.
You can even earn money while travelling through Worldpackers Gigs where you can get paid for helping other members of the community, writing about your experiences on their blog or by signing up new hosts. So, you could earn the money back that you spent on the membership fee – that definitely gets a thumbs up from me!

Once you have confirmed a work exchange placement, you are responsible for arranging all other logistics for your trip, including transport to the host destination such as flights and local transport, as well as visas and travel insurance.

One of the most popular options for work in exchange for accommodation is working in hostels. Depending on the host’s requirements you might expect to work for 5 or 6 days a week for around 5 hours a day, in exchange for a free bed in a hostel dorm and a free breakfast. What is expected and what is offered by the host varies depending on each individual placement, so make sure you check the details carefully. While I was backpacking in Mexico I volunteered at several different hostels, each with slightly different requirements, but I had great fun at them all!
