Chitzen Itza

Chitzen Itza is a Mayan archaeological site that is one of the seven wonders of the world. This complex is impressive because a lot of temples are well restored and the design of the main pyramid Kukulkán, also known as El Castillo, is mind-blowing.  The Maya built the pyramid so that on the spring and autumn equinoxes, the sun casts a shadow on the pyramid in such a way that a snake appears to slither up or down the huge steps.

Chitzen Itza is visited by more than 1.2 million people every year, and it is popular for good reason – although it can get very busy in peak times. It is possible to arrange day tours to Chichen Itza from Cancun and various other places in the region, but you can also visit independently, staying in the nearby town of Valladolid.

Isla Holbox

There are many beautiful beaches and islands to be found in Mexico, but few surpass the beauty of Isla Holbox. Isla Holbox is unique in the Yucatan as you can still find places on this tropical island to enjoy all by yourself. Nowadays, these kinds of places are difficult to find, but in Isla Holbox, it is blissfully easy.

As well as enjoying the beautiful beaches on Isla Holbox, another advantage of visiting the island is the relaxed vibe and it’s very cosy because there aren’t large resorts here unlike most places on the Riviera Maya.

There are a lot of things to do in Isla Holbox and it is one of the best places in the world to swim with whale sharks. As with any activity involving animals, make sure you choose a responsible tour provider and keep a safe distance from these magnificent creatures.

At first glance, Bacalar looks like a normal village, but you soon discover that it is on the shores of the beautiful Bacalar lagoon. Because the water is so clear, you can see many different shades of blue that give the lake its nickname the Lake of Seven Colors – and it is often compared to the Maldives.

One of the most popular activities in Bacalar is to take a tour on a sailing boat or canoe out on the lake. During the trip, you will enjoy beautiful views, discover different spots of the lake and swim in the middle of the lake at several small islands, as well as enjoy the sunshine and the colors.
